Vladimír Skrepl

The work of Vladimír Skrepl is very rare and, in a way, uncharacteristic in the context of the Czech art scene. His work goes beyond the influences and trends of the whole Czech art scene, artistically stands alone with a very characteristic expressive style. Still, all of the artist’s work plays an important role in the field of Czech contemporary art, as a longtime teacher at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts has a significant influence on the emerging generation of artists.

Vladimír Skrepl’s painting is characterized by a deep layer of color with recognizable strong brush strokes and figuratively tuned expressive content. Color life and certain spontaneity of painting create inimitable tension. In his paintings we often find distorted primitive human figures or animals on a neutral color background that leaves the figure to dominate the work.

Vladimír Skrepl was born in 1955 in Jihlava, from 1976 to 1981 he studied in Art History and Ethnography at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. Since 1994 he has been the head of a painting studio at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. Vladimír Skrepl has a wide scope on the Czech art scene. He works not only as a pedagogue, art theorist, painter and creator of buildings and installations, but also as a curator.
